Question

I'm trying to attach a wood board (1/2"x3"x30") for a shelf to a 3/4"-1" thick plaster wall. What type of fasteners do you recommend. The building is about 100-150 years old, an old brick townhouse.

Assume you are using some type of L-bracket for the shelves to sit on. Two choices, go with wood screws directly into wall studs (they are not necessarily easy to find on plaster walls), or use lag bolts thru the entire plaster/lath wall.
