Due to a massive amount of snow this winter, my rain gutter, located on the northeast side of the house has filled up with ice (the gutter including the downspout). I'm wondering if there is a doityourself fix to melt the ice in the gutter/downspout without having to purchase a heat strip? We've never had this happen before and ofcourse, never had this much snow before....

The gutter is a metal, no seam product..

Thanks for any info. you can provide...

Cool

This is one way.
Hookup a hose(s) to the spigot at the bottom of your water heater and use the hot water to melt the ice out of the gutter.
You may have to pause for about 30 mintues if you run out of hot water before finishing, to let the heater catch up.
This will accomplish two things. Melt the ice out, and flush the sediment out of the bottom of your water heater, which will help prolong the life of your water heater.
Good Luck!
