mounting a 30lb speaker

mounting a 30lb speaker

Hello I have a question about mounting hardware.

I have a 30lb speaker that came with a built in keyhole mount and a few 2.5 inch wood screws. I have 2 Lally columns surrounded by 1.5 inches thick of wood on each side. I would like to mount it on a Lally column. Obviously the 2.5 inch wood screw won't work. Is there anything else I can use for this to hang the 30lb speaker while keeping it secure and using the built in keyhole mounts?

Use a 1.5 or 1.75 inch screw of the largest diameter that will fit in the keyhole slot, no 10 or 12. Driven in 1.5" it will handle 30LBs in shear no problem.

Then I would use a tarp hook like this: Stanley Hardware 766385 Tarp Rope Hook, 3-1/2" - Utility Hooks - Amazon.com

You may have to shorten the hook part with a hacksaw to fit into the keyhole slot. Use #12 or #14 x 3/4 screws to fasten it to the wood.

Alternately, if you have the proper drill and bits, you could drill through the wood and into the lally column and use a long self-tapping screw into the column. A small diameter hole won't weaken or damage the column.
