I recently purchased a 72"x36"x12" bookcase and the manufacturer recommends attaching the unit to the wall. I have plaster walls and was wondering on the best method to attach the bookcase to this type of material.

I understand your question, but I think the mfg. makes that suggestion in order to maintain a true vertical on the book case placed against a wall on a carpeted floor.

The typical 'tack' strip used in carpet installation will cause narrow furniture to lean away from the wall - unsightly and unsafe.

This problem can be alleviated by inserting small wooden shims under the front edge of the bookcase. Done properly, the case will be vertical (with no chance of falling) and the shims, in a medium or deeper pile carpet will be invisible.
