What brackets do I use with this strange closet rod??

Hello, I'm new here, I'm having trouble understanding how to mount this closet rod I recently purchased. Because of a small metal piece sticking out forming an L shape out of an otherwise flat end to a closet rod, I can't mount it on my wall. The rod did not come with any brackets, only some screws. It is a 72-120 inch customizable size so I can turn a small bedroom into a large closet. I feel like I'm missing something incredibly simple but I can't figure it out, and any help at all would be appreciated. I've included pictures. How in the world am I supposed to mount this to my wall?

Please and thank you for any input, and I apologize in advance if this is not the best category to post this question in.

It looks like it is made to rest on top of a 1x4 that has been installed on the side walls of the closet. Then you would be able to use all 3 screw holes.
