Tape measure won't retract

I have an ORCO tape measure. It is encased in a rubber grip. It is not retracting easily. I can't access any screws to even try to fix it because of the rubber grip. When I push the rubber back as much as I easily can I see a screw, but impossible to get to.

Do I need to cut off, destroy, the rubber grip if I want to try to fix it?

Start cutting. At this point you have nothing to loose.

I'd say the majority of tape measures are not made to be repaired. I know guys who collect the crappy ones that wont work right and they send them back to the manufacturer for replacement.

I think that only pays if you can send 20 of them in when shipping is $15 a box. But as I understand it, the mfg replaces them for free.

If it's not retracting I'd lube it with WD-40 and if that didn't fix it I'd pitch it and be shopping for a new one.

I've been putting oil on it, no joy. Just for fun I'll cut off the rubber grip and see what's what. I'm very good at taking broken things apart, seldom manage to fix them or put them back together .
