using rare earth magnet to locate property pins?

I am trying to locate the pins on the corners of my lot in prep for fence installation. I have found the 3 across the back and need to find the front 2 corners now. I am trying to use a metal detector and having some luck. I am close to one but haven't found it just yet.

I am wondering if a rare earth magnet on the end of a string would work since it is a metal stake that is used for the pins?

Any thoughts on this?

Depending on how deep the pin is below ground it may work but it will be clumsy swinging around on the end of a string.

I've always used a metal detector to find ones I'm looking for.

Magnets range is so short it would be almost useless locating a surveying stake. A metal detector is a much better tool for the job. If you can't find the stake it is possible that it is no longer in the ground.
