Hanging things with chain

Not sure where to ask this: Are there any tricks to making small adjustments to the length of a chain?

I hung an air filter in my shop using chain connected to four points on top of the unit. Leveling the unit is giving me trouble with the chain being a fixed length.

You can make those small adjustments with the screw hooks that you screwed into the ceiling. Just turn that screw hook one way or the other make small adjustments. If you need to, get longer/different hooks.

Twist the chain to adjust the length.

Or cut the chain shorter and hang it using small turnbuckles with hooks. The turnbuckle can be adjusted in or out to make it longer or shorter. Before installing it turn the ends to the middle of their travel so that you can raise and lower as needed.

Thanks Dixie! The chains are not hung from the bottom of the joists. They are attached to the sides of the joists via eye bolts, so the chain runs up into the joists and the top of the unit is only about 1/4" from the bottom of the joists. This is to cut down on the transfer of vibration into the joists. There is some adjustment in the eyebolts in the top of the unit, but it is not enough.

Hal, would that work with 1/4" chain? I only have four links and then two threaded connecting links for each eye bolt.

How heavy are the filters? Maybe something other than chain might be more suitable. Pics may help.

Change them, put in eye bolts through the joist vertically with washers and nuts, transfer them over one at a time, then adjust the length!
