Is that the type of chair with a lever on the side where you can raise and lower the seat via a piston ?
I've never seen the chair go up by itself. Usually you sit on it and it goes down by itself.
Either way..... there really isn't a repair other than replacing the cartridge.
That could be almost the same cost as a new chair.
See if this video helps you. Once you determine the cartridge size you could check on a price.
Typically they run $20-25.
