Oil for protecting hand tools?

What type of oil do you use for protecting hand tools / things from rust?

I'm hoping for a product that comes in a quart size product or something along those lines that's more cost effective than oil in the few ounce drip cans like:

Motor oil?

 

A product like T9 Boeshield might be more effective.

 

Any light oil will work. WD-40 in a pinch.
I carry a bottle of 3 in1 oil in my pouch and use it all the time.
I oil my side cutters, needle nose and dykes almost every week.

You're just going to put a few drop on the tool and rub it in with a rag.

 

if your looking for something that cost less maybe try mineral oil

 

What type of tools are you trying to protect?
Most any type of oil will work.

 

@alan73 - I know i use mineral oil on wood cutting boards in the kitchen. And you can buy it in the pharmacy area of walmart, etc for not much.

I was surprised looking at https://www.zoro.com/3-in-one-multi-...specifications that 3 in 1 oil's base oil is mineral?! Same stuff.

And I read somewhere to use mineral oil on stainless steel BBQ grill.

I guess I have to google, but mineral oil is like commercial industrial oils - comes from the ground, not animal or plant based? And just clear?

@marksr shovels, etc. and I came home from the trap range yesterday and realized I think I should do something to the different surfaces of the thrower and guns? we'll shoot 100 - 150 shells through the shotgun so I don't think I need / want to do a full cleaning of the gun, but at least wipe it down with something?

All that said, I think too - at least on the thrower / on the ground - an oil coating will attract dirt/ be abrasive and make things worse?
