Not sure where to post this, so I will post it here.

Hi !!

Hope that y'all had a Merry Christmas. Got a weird question for y'all. After overeating, is it normal to vomit and feel much better afterwards? This happened with my Christmas dinner and nobody else ever heard of such a thing or I received weird looks. Wasn't sure if I am screwed up or if this is normal.

Thank you for any answers!!!

Did you eat something that didn't agree with you? If you forced yourself to vomit just to feel better please don't do that!

Throwing up is a normal bodily defense to rid the stomach of things it can't process or handle (is harmful to it or your body in general), a virus that is effecting your stomach or if you overeat and your stomach rejects it. The latter being an extreme case of overeating, not what normally happens at holiday times.

No one should ever force themselves to throw up. Being gross, but honest, throwing up starts by removing what's in your stomach on up and out of your body. However, it also begins to pull what is in your intestines up and into your stomach. If the vomiting continues for very long periods you will eventually be throwing up whats in your bowels. Not kidding you guys! Some vomiting is okay, but long periods are very unhealthy. Forced vomiting can cause the latter to happen sooner.

Also, with forced vomiting to ease overeating discomfort can 'train' your body to automatically throw up when its uncomfortable due to too much in the stomach, food, excess acids or simply gas. This eventually leads to bolemia (sp?) which is a serious eating disorder.

Kay

Ps. I'm moving this to health & fitness

You're probly ok but the Romans liked this idea and installed vomitoriums.

To bad young girls use this as a diet. Very dangerous.

I will add this though: sometimes you just know you need to vomit. My 19yo discovered this when he drank too much one night. He showed me the bottle, how much he drank, and in what amount of time and if he hadn't, it probably would have killed him or put him in the hospital.

Doesn't make it right, just proves the point that moderation CAN save your life and also CAN save you a lot of discomfort!

I do not force myself to vomit after overeating and it is just a one shot deal. 1 episode of kneeling to the porcelain god and I feel fine. It just happens occasionally so it made me wonder. Thank you much for the input.

it's probably the same adrenaline rush you get when chunking after drinking too much (other than making room to drink more!!)

do you eat again after an episode?

I do not eat immmediately after chunking. Bulimia isn't necessarily a concern from this. I am a 29 year old male who is 6'5" and 260 lbs. This kind of vomiting occurs once every few months. It happens with all sorts of foods, just that I overeat at times, and after an hour of stomachache or so, I vomit without even trying too. However this also happens whenever I eat any kind of Chinese food other than Won Ton fried or egg rolls. This has happened at about a dozen Chinese restaurants in different states, so I am probably just allergic to MSG.

Could very well be. My son has the same reaction with onions. We just watch what we put in his foods and when we eat out we have to make sure there are no onions in it. I can use onion extract, but not the onion itself.

Strange how the body will reject something when it can't tolerate it.

Sorry if I implied that you did this on purpose. I mainly wanted others reading these posts to be aware of the problems of forced vomiting.

or you're allergic to roadkill, specifically cats.

i sometimes get the same feeling from the buffets, but i can alleviate it somewhat by loosening my belt and popping my pants button. i think the water and soda i/you drink expands the food in my/your stomach, to the point where there's no more room for anything, then the only option is out.

do you do anything strenuous in that hour, i know i can't do much more than lay on the couch and hold my 'baby'

but at least i got my money's worth!

Or, you can utilize the technique we do at mom's during the Holidays...we have before dinner pants, and after dinner pants. Everyone is usually dressed a little for the Holiday visit, but after dinner everyone sheds the cute pants and shirts and we all end up in sweats or drawstring pants

Thumbs down don't read this if you're eating at your computer.....

Whoa! back up a minute here.......

If the vomiting continues for very long periods you will eventually be throwing up whats in your bowels. Not kidding you guys!
NO WAY!!! are you serious??? no one has ever thrown up poop! you may throw up bile, but not poopy! are you sure???

i've had the flu and what-not, and i've had LOOOOONG bouts of vomiting, well beyond the point of emptying my stomach (ie: dry heaves), and poop never came out! of course, usually with such a bout, there's a fair amount of diarrhea going on at the same time, which empties the other end, but still! i've never EVER heard of anyone vomiting poop.

Its fatal at that point. The only times I've ever heard of this happening is with terminally ill patients and from my best friend (who was their home health nurse). I didn't know it was possible either.

Vomiting

Overeating, eating the wrong food, poor combinations of foods can result in vomiting. It is normal to feel relief because you have relieved the stomach of whatever has invaded it and upset it.

It is recommended that you not eat for several hours afterwards, but drink lots of fluids because you lose alot when you vomit. Water, weak tea, or fruit juice are good. Sip. Don't gulp. Drinks should not be cold. The stomach has been traumatized and needs to be soothed. You have lost minerals, too, so apple juice or cranberry juice will help replace those. Your next meal should be a light one, such as soup.

Avoid overeating to the point that you are uncomfortable. You know when your stomach reaches the point of discomfort. Going beyond that point can result in vomiting. You can always have leftovers later.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, I Googled in on this. I wanted to say that it is possible to vomit poop and not die. I have vomited poop many many times. I used to have intestinal blockages when I was a kid, and my parents refused to take me in to get it taken care of until I almost died twice of dehydration. The doc said I had about one more day left before Id have been dead. About every 6 weeks, these blockages would flare up, and Id be in so much pain I couldnt stand up straight, the pain was worse than the broken wrist I had later on. It would stay like that for about a week. During that week, I would vomit everything in my system down to that blockage. The last couple days, it would be this thick creamy dark brown stuff that definitely smelled and probably tasted like poop. My mom would always see that as a good sign since I was almost done. I went through this for about 2 years, I just learned to expect it and live like that. Once I got the doc on my side, he put me under the knife for a half hour and Ive been better since.

Faeculant vomiting (the vomiting of small bowel contents) is often a symptom of a blockage.

not normal, but not horrible

This happened to me once as well and I spoke to a doctor about it. She said that as long as it didn't happen regularly and I DIDN'T FORCE IT, I should be fine. I had stuffed myself at a buffet with a lot of spicy food and felt very bloated afterwards. I came home and decided to sleep it off. I woke up several hours later with a horribly tight feeling in my stomach. I tried to go back to sleep, but it wouldn't go away. I got up and walked around for a few minutes, fighting the urge. I soon found myself sprinting to the bathroom and vomiting five or six times in the next fifteen minutes. I felt much better afterwards, but now I gag every time I smell the particular restaurant.
