Question Protein Shake Vs. Whey Protein?

OK, im 15 and wanting to bulk up my upper body some. I was going to get some whey protein, (or even cheaper, eggs and bacon ) untill i saw this "shake":

http://www.drugstore.com/qxp70547_33..._chocolate.htm

So, setting price aside, which would be best, the powder or the shake?

Any other info you need?

Thank

EDIT: Ok, VB Code doesnt work?

While MetRX does make some decent products, you do not get what you pay for compared to normal food products. The best sources of protein are milk, egg whites and tuna. Lean meats are next on the list. The most cost effective thing you can do is eat a nutritious, well balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and the above protein sources.

Now, as a weight lifter myself, I know that taking something like this is good for the psychological benefit it can provide. If you think you're getting more out of your workout because you drink a shake or look at the pictures in Muscle & Fitness, who cares if you're spending a couple of bucks that you didn't need to?

To answer your question

To gain mass at your age do the following.

Eat lots of whole foods, milk, eggs, red meat, chicken, cheese, potatoes, and veggies.

Avoid junk foods.

Now to answer your protein powder question. The bottom line is that whey protein is superior to other protein sources found in milk and red meat. Why? Because whey protein absorbs extremly fast into your blood stream reparing your muscles after a grueling workout. However, protein shakes are a food supplement and should never replace a meal. Eat three large meals everyday with 2 protein shakes and youll begin to see results immedietly.

Also if you want to gain bulk follow these general weight lifting guidlines.

1.) lift heavy weights 5 sets of 6 reps.
2.) Do 15 sets per bodypart.
3.) Dont workout londer than 90 mins. If it takes you longer than that your moving too slow.
4.) rest 3-4 minutes between sets.
5.) drink about a 3/4 of a gallon of water a day. muscles are 70% water...
6.) eat, eat, eat, and when your full take another 3 bites.
7.) only train 4 days per week. 2 on 1 off 2 on 2 off repeat...
8.) Consume atleast 50G of whey protein after your workout with about 70-100g of simpoe carbs such being juice...

If you do all of the following you will grow like hell and if your lifting intensly it will be solid muscle....

If you are wanting to bulk, do 4 sets of 6-8 repetittions for each set. Believe me, I done that and I started getting good results. I have read in many books that you shouldn't lift for more then 45 mins a day, if you do more, you could overwork your muscles. Make sure that you take a multivitamin and make sure to get 6-8 hours of sleep. Take one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, that really helps. If you are going to take whey, get the body x fortress at Wal-Mart, it gets the job done. Just do everything that Gunner and I have said and you will get thick quick.

Hello,

Thanks for the tips. Ive adjusted my work out accordingly

A couple questions though.

"Take one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight"

I dont think thats possbile

Usually I eat 15 grams of protien for breakfast. (Red Barron Scrambles) Oh! I was reading something on the internet the other day that claimed nutrients were useless after being microwaved. So, should i bake the Red Barron Scrambles in the oven?

Very Little protein For Lunch. School food, if including meat at all, is usually minimal and taste terrible.

I drink two scoops of GNC protien powder every day (after the workout on the days i workout). Should i increase the scoops?

Then, probably, on average, 15-20 grams of protien for dinner.

So, that's a total of 70 grams every day. Is that be enough? I wiegh 140 lbs. (I know, its only half my weight

Oh, im not a big junk food eater. However, Im addicted to Coca Cola. I try to limit myself to one can per day. Would this cause any negative side effects?

Thanks

The body can only absorb so much protein at a time, so you want to spread it out in small portions throughout the day. Sounds like this is what you're doing already. As for the microwave destroying nutrients, I don't know how that would be, but that doesn't make it false. I'll see if I can find any more info on that topic. I know that prepackaged meals are more likely to contain ingredients that are not nutritious, so would it be possible to substitute a couple of freshly scrambled eggs instead of the red barron stuff?

One can of coke a day is not going to cause you any real harm. If you enjoy it, I don't see a problem with that quanitity. Obviously, you know you would be better off without it.

As to the protein powder, you certainly could add another couple of scoops if you wanted at another time during day. I could never get this stuff down, myself.

HMm. Here's a thought. I could make a bacon, egg sandwich the night before and warm it up in the oven the next moring. Would cooked eggs keep that long?

What brand did you get? The GNC brand tastes pretty good to me.

Don't know about the egg question, easy way to find out.

I was taking mega mass 2000. I've tried other brands over the years and didn't have much liking for any of them. I found that I do better just getting my protein from food instead of supplements.

Yes, cooked eggs will last about 3 days in the fridge.

Really ??? I always thought that 100% natural protein powders are much more efficient than regular food. I guess that I was wrong ... I am still taking my breakfast protein shake

I though that too ... Anyway, I think it really depends on the type of nutrition you have.

No, I'm not saying protein supplements are bad, just that they were bad for me. As a source of protein, they're great. I can eat a chicken breast, but I just could never swallow the protein drinks that I was taking. If you can, great!

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply....

Here are some simple things to do to fully get down your protein intake....
1. Eat tuna fish, it is loaded in protein and tastes pretty good with mayonaise.
You can eat it on bread, crackers, by itself, etc.

2. Add a tablespoon or two of peanut butter to one or two of your protein
shakes. That can be another 8-10 grams easily of protein.

3. Eat some peanuts, they have alot of protein, but they also have alot of
sodium.

Here is a link to my article....it is for the ectomorph bodytype......

I dont think ANYTHING goes good with mayonaise.

I didnt know peanuts had that much protien. Good idea.

Oh! I have another question. GNC's "Physical" came in a couple days ago. Some of the articles and adds push Creatine and NO supplements. Are these really as effective advertised? (or somewhere close to it)

Oh! Thanks for the tips, they they seem to be working. Ive had to buy a new set of weights.

No problem man, I have actually just got done taking a month off from weight lifting so I don't really know anything about those supplements. I know that the NO (nitric oxide) helps alot because it opens the veins which may make them a little bigger. I haven't heard of the push creatine but hey, if you got the time and money to try it, do it! Good luck and I am glad that my advice is actually helping someone.

Thanks for the comments man. I now weigh 122 and I can bench 192.
I am actually bigger then what I am in the pics but I will eventually pack on some more solid mass and then post some new pics. I would load for 3 days with your creatine and then just take a regular 5 grams a day. Keep it up man!
