Chewing pen/pencil (bad habit thing)

Didn't realize it was one of my bad habits to chew on my pen and/or pencil 'til my hygienist asked me if I chewed on pens and pencils while examining my teeth. She did mention to stop doing it (sorta) but I forgot to ask...what happens if I don't? Just wondering... how was she able to tell? (Yes...I know it's her profession but still...just wondering).

And, what would happen if I don't stop? What can I do TO stop? I do it w/out thinking. All my pens and pencils have teeth marks on them. I caught myself doing it while I'm thinking or reading.

Wearing down the teeth would be a concern, much as it is for people who grind their teeth while they sleep at night. The hygienist probably noticed some wearing on the teeth.

Another concern would be sticking germy pens and pencils in your mouth. To stop chewing on pens and pencils, just imaging big, fat, juicy germs in your mouth!! Yuck!!

Many people do not realize that bad oral habits can damage teeth. Cracking ice and nuts, using teeth like scissors to cut tape, open packages, etc., chewing on pens and pencils. You can fracture teeth, which can lead to leaking of liquids inside the tooth, discomfort and decay, root canals, etc. Dental work costs lots of money.

Think twice before you stick something in your mouth. Save your teeth for food. If you feel you need to have something in your mouth, try sugarless gum or mints.

Teeth can be damaged and also misaligned, making braces more likely. Now that you're aware this is a problem, truly wanting to quit will be all you need to do to stop.

Thank guys I'm glad I posted this. I am now actually aware of what I'm doing and remembering what you guys said each time I pick up a pen or pencil. Amazingly, talking about it helps me out and knocks me to my senses!
