Taking medication w/coffee

Does a medication become less potent (not sure what the word would be) if you take it with coffee? The prescription doesn't say not take it w/coffee nor to take with water, but I took my medication with coffee this morning. I have a hard time swallowing pills so this time it kinda just hung around there in my throat with the coffee for a bit so it dissolved a little until I finally got it down. Pretty nasty taste.

Taking medication w/coffee

Just give your pharmacist a call.

All of what you swallow goes the same place, but it might act a little faster or not last as long - just a guess.

Food and alcohol are probably a little more important than coffee, but he/she would know.

I'm a big coffee drinker and I also have trouble swallowing pills, and have never had any problems mixing any meds and coffee. Aside from the nasty taste of being diluted, I don't think the meds are being affected. I agree a pharmacist would know for sure.

Uh....strike that. I re-read the directions and it does state to drink w/plenty of water. I'm thinking the water thing is there b/c after taking the medication, I'm dry as...uh...I'm dry as.... uh.... as... the desert? It really makes me thirsty!

I just emailed the pharmacist and mentioned the coffee thing. Will post something once I get a response.

I wouldn't mind it acting faster

This is really cool. Look what I found:

Except...it doesn't really answer my question.

Since caffeine is a drug, there is the possibilty of a reaction between it and the medication. I'd stick with water.

Never got a response emailed back to me.

However, I got my refill this past Friday and asked the pharmacist directly. He stated AT FIRST I should just drink it with water w/no statement as to WHY. I asked if it was ok if it was just to swallow it down while drinking my cup of coffee in the morning. A slight hesitation came from him and said it was ok. Hmmm...

I got a 2nd opinion from another pharmacist and she said that on the specific medication I'm taking, I probably shouldn't take it with coffee b/c of the possible side effects the med has. Which is... blood pressure rises... my heart beats faster than normal, etc. Drinking coffee can increase it even more...causing me to possibly have a heart attack. With my health condition, I'm probably ok but probably shouldn't be doing it anyway.

I'm sticking to water.

Just an update.
