lump on back of neck
theres this lump on the back of neck that's under the skin. it hurts if pressed and if i tilt my head down enough the skin presses aganst it and it hurts. if i tilt my head up you can barely feel the lump. its small about the size of a bole i would say. i took pictures sense i can't see in the mirror and the lump is not red. when i feel it its about the size of a aa battery.im thinking it might be a boil as you can't see anything above the skin.

well im going to call a few places and see what they can do and how much its going to cost and if i can make monthly payments. i want to have tests done to see what it is. i don't have insurance and im laid off without un-employment benefits.

Sorry no one's answered, but I think people can only guess.
I'm not a doctor, but my guess would be either a cyst or an infection. A doctor may be able to tell what it is, just by looking at it and feeling it. You may not need tests.
How long have you had it? Did it come fast or slow? If it came on fast and recent, my guess is probably right. If it came on slow and is growing, then you'll probably need it tested.
Do you have any clinics in your area? They may be free or cheapest or will work with you financially.

Ok just discharged from the hospital. it was a sebaceous cyst. they froze it and made a incision and drained most of the gunk out. they put a little gauze in it to keep it open a bit so it does not immediately fill back up. i need to have a follow up with a primary care doctor to have the padding removed.

ok went to the DR. most of the padding fell out. they removed a little more and put some antibiotic ointment on it and covered it up with a new bandage. he gave me some samples of antibiotic pills and a sample of ointment to apply once a day. its very strong so use no more then a Q-tip worth of it. he wants me to come back Tuesday to see how its healing.other then that he said its looks good so far.

follow up. he said it looks real good and to just put a band aid over it till it heals. but im having trouble getting the band aids to keep on the back of my neck. they don't like to stick there. i have to put a piece of tape over the band aid to keep it on. he doesn't think it will come back. but if it does call him and he will send me to a surgeon who wil hopefully work with me sense i don't have insurance.

And I am glad to hear what your problem was. When I read the thread title, I thought maybe you had Hodgkins or non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
