Return Vent Putting Out Hot Air?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a Rheem Unit. We just started using the heat unit this fall and one of the first few times we cut it on, the return vent "blew" out dust and the whole room was hazy. We thought it was weird but it only happened once so we thought no more of it. Now, our return vent has hot air coming out of it. It is not blowing out of the return vent but if you put your hand or walk by it, you can feel heat. Any ideas on what this could be? It is only 4 years old.

That's odd.

How do the supplies feel? Does this have a/c on it?

Are you sure that's a return vent?

return vent letting out heat

Yes, it is the return vent. We have been here for 4 years and this has never happened. It is not really blowing out heat, but you feel it. We are thinking that the thermostat may be broken b/c you can hear it working under the house but it doesn't always come out of the vents. Very strange. This system has given us nothing but trouble. We would love to get a new one (Trane), but simply can't afford it right now. So, we are just trying to figure it out on our own before we call someone. Last night we had to put the fan on "on" instead of "Auto" for it to work good.

Dust and heat from return?

Sounds more like refrigerant filled the room and you have an leak in your A/C system. See if you can still get the a/c to run.

I am lost too! LOL

Did the service tech tell you why you had this happen???

maybe some odd reason, the blower ran backwards?? (but then if it ran backward, there be no air flow??)
