Heat Pump Problem

I have a Trane TWV736A140A0 heat pump that seems to have a hard time keeping up. I can set the thermostat at a given temperature (either 62 or 68) and it runs constantly and the emergency heat kicks in more than I feel it should. I mean it was 40 degrees yesterday and it just kept running. I can lower the thermostat and it kicks off, and when we have a fire going it will shut down when the room warms up, but the heat pump can't seem to do it by itself. I quiver to think that we may need a new unit this close to Christmas. Any help you can offer would be great.

Thanks, John Leech
