Question heat pump problem

I have a 10 year old Rheem split system. outside compressor and fan started short cycling, only running for a few seconds for 7 or 8 times and then would run for several minutes like it was supposed to. after 6 to 8 weeks of this, compressor and fan stopped running at all. can manually make contactor and compressor and fan work just fine. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Is the freon ok in the unitcheck the wire layout on the outdoor unit and see .You could have a low pressure cut out there. When it runs does the big copper line get hot?

thank you for your quick reply. an industrial HVAC tech that works with me checked freon and it was ok. he doesn't really know much about heat pumps so he couldn't go any further. he suggested new thermostat which didn't help. after that he suggested it might be the circuit board for the defrost cycle. Do you think this could be the problem?

If you are manually pushing in the contactor and it works, you will need a multi-meter to trace the low voltage wires to find where it's dropping out. What were the pressures he saw when he checked them?
