..Heat Pump outdoor fan on-and-off continuously

When working properly, the outdoor fan of our 6-yr-old Carrier heat pump turns on and off with the air compressor. A few weeks ago we noticed that, initially, the fan would turn on with the compressor, but, after 5-min, the fan shut off even though the compressor remained running. However, in a minute or so, the fan wouldl kick on, but for only 45 seconds, then shut off again. This 45-second-on and 1-minute-off cycle continued until the compressor turned off when the room reached the desired temperature. All other components of the heating system functioned properly and the house got the heat while compressor was running.

What may cause this? Please help!

I would say that the fan motor is going out on you. It's overheating and cutting out on internal overload. Don't continue to run it like this until it is replaced.

Hi, Matt and Ed.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'll post the outcome after replacing the motor.
