TRANE Air Handler Hum

TRANE TWH03 1989. We moved into the house 4 months ago.

With heat pump not running, the air handler unit has a loud hum, like a transformer would make . The hum stops if I turn OFF the 3 phase circuit breaker next to the air handler.

The handler hangs from the beams below a guest bedroom and the hum is quite noticeable in the bedroom - bad for guest business

I looked all over the Interent for a diagram of what is inside an air handler but that seems to be a closely guarded secret.

Please tell me what could be causing the hum and options to reduce/eliminate it?

You said it----- Go for the transformer first that should be it.Turn power off till you find it. Schematic should be on blower door show where it is Then turn power back on. Tighten the screws a little turn at a time and see. Some time back them out. Put some rubber under it. I have had where they make so much noise or hum that had to put a new one in.

Trane air handlers have their wiring diagrams inside the air handler in a pouch either a clear plastic or paper with black print.

Yes there is on inside the door but most likely you have to replace the transformer to get it to be quiet becouse it might be to old and worn out

Question Now to find a transformer

Thank you for the accurate advice you guys. That puppy is humming like a hornets nest. Tightening the mounting screws made no difference.

Looks like a JARD 4021F or even a 40241F transformer will do the trick. Now to find out where a non-contractor, like me, can obtain one.

No one seems to sell them on the Internet. Maybe I can find a friendly contractor somewhere in WA?

Unhappy Thank you, but no thank you.

Ed, thank you for the leads.

I have two problems with the OEM part as advertised.
1) The first one became noisy, the "exact replacement" will probably behave same.
2) The OEM part costs ten times more than the, admittedly trade price, of an after market transformer like the JARD 4021F unit, and many others.

The JARD unit specs look fine to me and they claim they take special precautions, weld the plates, to ensure that the transformer remains quiet. Would you strongly advise against using such a non-OEM transformer?

Can you point me to a possible source for JARD?

Thanks.
