buy new HP?

Ok...need to get new contactor and two new capcitors on an 1985 Trane HP. Issue: i am selling my house soon. I dont want to spend $3200 for a new system.

What are your thoughts? Should i purchase a new heat pump? Is there anything out there that is much cheaper?

fwiw, i have a two story townhouse- 1230 sq ft.

Current unit is 20 yrs old-well past the average life of a heat pump. I think you have to weigh the cost of a repair vs the cost of replacing the unit? I would not want to put a great deal of $$$ into a 20 yr old heat pump. Also a new unit will make your townhouse more attractive to sell and perhaps the cost of new HP can be recouped when you sell. By the way, what size is your heat pump? You should replace both indoor and outdoor unit and get a matched system and better warranty. Good Luck!
