Heating unit prices jump rumor - true or not?

Somebody told me that the prices for A/C and heating units will go up 20 - 50% starting this November 1st, 2005. Not sure why and not sure how can all manufacturers raise prices like that at once, but I would like know whether anyone of you HVAC professionals have heard anything about that. Is this true? If so, why would this happen?

I have a 19 y.o. heat pump system that can break any day. I would not want to wait till the prices go up 50% if I am almost certain it would need replacement in next one or two years.

Please, share what you've heard.

Thanks!

Starting in Jan 2006 the min SEER rating for an a/c unit will be 13 SEER. That being said you will not be able to get a 10 SEER and will have to pay more for the 13 SEER.

I have not heard of the price jump you're speeking of. Can you provide a link ??

I agree with Matt..

I know some dealers has incressed thier service fee or labor rate due to higher gas prices.

Unfortunately, I do not know the true source of this rumor. It was mentioned to me by someone who heard it from someone else. I had some doubts about the validity and decided to ask the pros here.

So, SEER 13 will be the new standard. But if you were to replace your system you would want that anyway, right? SEER 10 is a lot less efficient, if I am correct. So, effectively there's not price jump for those who would want an efficient unit, right?

It depends on what they will be charging the 13SEERS at.. lf they bring the price up, a home owner may not get the money back out of the system. if they electric rate is pretty cheap, and only use the A/C 4-6 weeks out of the year.

If you live way up north a 10 SEER may be all you need and a 13 would be a waste.

Well, I am not changing the 19-y.o. system for a simple reason - don't have the money now.

Do heat pumps (that's what I have now) have the same ratings - SEER 10, SEER13, etc.? Do they mean the same for both cooling AND heating?
