Magnetic vent covers - good or bad?

Expecting prices for heating this winter to skyrocket, I started thinking how to save money on it. Saw ads about magnetic vent/register covers to seal the vents in rooms that are not used. We have 3 bedrooms that we do not use now and I do not want to waste heat on them. Would covering and sealing vents be a good idea? I've read conflicting opinions with some people saying it's not good for the heating unit and can premature wear it out and upset the balance of air flow in the house?

What's professionals' opinion?

Magnetic vent covers

not a good idea to cover them up the air has to go somewere and it will back up and just beats the duct and could blow it out in time

The main problem you may run into is lack of airflow across the heat exchanger which could potentially cause it to crack from overheating. The best thing you can do is get a pro in to do a clean and check and while they are there ask them to do a temp rise across the heat exchanger with the vents closed off vs open. With them all open you could see somewhere around a 60º rise much more than that you're asking for trouble.
