Vibrating noise @ air handler
#1

@ start-up on heat i get some noise, about 2 min into heating i get a lot of vibrating from the lines and is now resonating through the wall. It only does this in the HEAT mode and not when COOLING! would the refrigerant have anything to do with this?

just a few questions, have you changed anything in the system, ie: heatpump?
coil? have you had any service work done on the system during the summer? try to give a little bit more history on your system and maybe we can try to figure this out.

NO, nothing like that has been done. The system is 8 years old and the only things done to it was a new defrost board 3.5 years ago and a run capacitor 2 years ago I have noticed that it's been getting noiseier every year.and it has a heavy clunk when shutting off.

noisy heatpump
doug,
approx. how many feet seperate the heat pump from the air handler? and is the copper at the outside going into the heat pump soldered on or do they have fittings on them? one more thing, what are the brand names of the system.
sorry to ask so many questions, but i'm not at your home doing the service,
but these are qustions i would be asking myself to try and ascertain a fix.

I have a similar problem with my janitrol heat pump. It has a hum that just started emitting from under the house. You can feel the vibrations through the floor. I had the unit serviced in August and they replaced the service nuts/valve? on the outside unit. In the last few years we have had the indoor coil, condensor and compressor all replaced. Now we have this hum. Could be time for a new air handler?

I feel your pain
We installed a new system and now have a constant hum in the large freon line.
When cooling it is fine.
It can easily be heard around the house and is maddining.
What has been tried so far?
Replaced (the new) outside unit and no change.
Replaced (the new) inside A coil and no change.
Replaced (the new) large freon line with bigger line and no change.
Installed a muffler on large freon line and no change.
Packed all kinds of insullation around lines and inside unit , still loud.
At least I'm not alone.
What else can be done? earplugs???
Surely someone has been able to solve this problem.

noisy amana
I experienced a vibrating hum that worsened with time in the furnace box of an amana 80 horizonatal gas furnace. Did exactly what you describe, no problems when either the air or fan was on, only in heat mode. It turned out to be some kind of resonat vibration in the temp reostat inside the heat exchanger, and would only vibrate when in a free state, ie, not against a stop. The flue fan motor is what caused it to vibrate, and you could stop it if you damped it out with your hand.
Once I figured out what it was, I never fixed it, just lived with it.
Good luck!

Usually when you get that vibration in a heat pump system it is coming directly from the compressor. A compressor has a natural harmonic "hum" due to its design. It can travel through the lines and and be magnified anywhere in the system. Check all copper lines and make sure they are not touching anything without being padded. This will also insure that the lines do not wear a hole from rubbing.
