Propane VS Heatpump I need advise!

My KY,home is 1920 sq ft and I now heat with a 9 year old Bryant 90% propane furnace. I use about 700 gallon of propane a year. The unit works great, but I was thinking about a heatpump with the rise of propane(1.98 a gallon). A new (york) 13 seer 4 ton unit is going to cost about $5500. Should I do it? How long will it take to recoup my investment? Thanks for any advise!!!!!

Z400,

Several questions.

What area of country do you live?
(Sorry, I see you live in Kentuck which is a perfect area for a heat pump and I assume you have you have inexpensive electric rates)

What is your electric rate?

Does your electric utility offer any rate incentives for going to a heat pump for heating?

What is the HSPF rating(heating) for the York unit you are looking at?

Do you plan on using your propane furnace as a backup in a dual fuel set-up or discard it and purchase a matching air handler?

Have you had a Manual J heat/cool load calculation performed for sizing your new system correctly and has your ductwork been inspected for size, condition, and suitability for a heat pump system?

Any payback recoupment would be a wild guess from the info you have provided. You should ask your quoting dealer about this.

Good LucK!
