York and Coleman are NOW the same?

My wife's cousin came over last night to give me a bid on a 4 ton heat pump($4000 installed) I told him I would like to get a York. He said that York bought Coleman and that the unit will come in the box with both York and Coleman stickers. Is he pulling my leg?

COLEMAN® are registered trademarks of The Coleman Company, Inc., used under license. Manufactured in the United States for York, A Johnson Control Company.

http://www.colemanac.com/about_us.asp

Coleman originally entered the HVAC market to serve the mobile home industry. Coleman and York are owned by the same company, Johnson Controls but I don't believe they are the same equipment. I really don't care for either but if it's one over the other, then take the York. I have always associated the Coleman name more as to outdoor camping equipment than residential HVAC equipment.

My opinion.

coleslaw or pork

z400acdc,

if i only had to choose between the two i would go for the york, that way when you have to get parts for it down the road the sales guy won't roll his(or hers) eyes at you. but $4000.00 ? i guess you mean a completely new system inside and out with new ducting? this is just me but, for that kinda dough i would make sure that the system that is installed will be compliant with the new epa mandates that will be in effect by the year 2010, these systems are available
now. the use the refridgerant r-410a also known as pureon or somthing like that. r-22 as well as 10 seer units are quickly on the way out thanks to the tree-huggers and government (the person who invents the catylic converter for cow farts will be a millionare). you may ( more than likely) have to replace the line sets (copper tubing in and out of the home, keep and sell the old stuff take the misses out on the down when you sell it). i know this site is set up to take questions and answer them on existing systems, but, if you are going to replace an entire, me , i would go for the government regulated system of the future, that way you will ready.
hope that some of this info helps, and i know that there are a lot of hvac
mafia groups out there that don't want you'all to know this, they got a lot of stuff getting ready to be obsolite that they need to get rid of. of couse it would'nt be fair of me not to say this, you will still be able to buy 10 seer units (which i believe you had no intension of buying, 13+ is the low end now) until
the supply runs out . r-22 will still be available for a little while(not going to say dates, it will be a bull-rush to buy all the supplies and drive prices higher remember when r-12 was phased out).
i'm sorry for the ramblings, but all of us in the hvac field now have to go and get recertified in this new tech., and purchase totally new equiptment becase ther isn't a single high priced item (vac pumps, gauges, recovery units<etc.)
that we can use. waa, poor us, waa poor consumer.

What does the $4000 quote from cuz include?

What are the SEER and HSPF ratings of model quoted?

What is the warranty?

What area of country do you live?

Putting cost aside, It is my opinion that Trane/Am Std make the best heat pumps. Make certain you get a heat/cool load calcualtion performed for correctly sizing new equipment.

Good Luck!

He quoted me a 13 seer and I don't know the HSPF.He was not going to change the duct because it is fine. I live in Bowling Green , KY. I think he said the warranty was a 5 year with 10 on the compresser. I have a 9 year old home with a(propane) 90% plus Bryant unit. It works great, but I am tired of the propane companies dragging me around by the balls!!!!! Most of the haet and air guys tell me to keep the propane and that it is worth the extra cost a year.

If your house is insulated properly and you have reasonable electric rates(not more than $.09/kw), then you are a good candidate for a high eff heat pump. You should consider models with a var speed blower.

I would not purchase a heat pump system that does not have a rated HSPF of at least 9+.

The idea of staying with propane is absurd unless you want to investigate its use as a dual fuel system(new HP paired with your existing furnace). If this is of interest then I would check with a Bryant dealer as to this possibility.

Good LucK!

Thanks for your advise!! I think I am going to wait till spring so I can do some more investigating. I DON'T want to take out a good working piece and get something that does not give me the quality and performance. Everybody tells me something diff. Reud, Reem, York, Trane, Coleman????????My first bid was 5500 for a York. My wifes cousin at $4000 seemed like a good deal.
