Angry Carrier Heat Pump won't heat

10 to 12 year old unit (38YH030300). The outside unit won't kick on, yet it makes a humming sound. If I turn the whole thing off at the thermostat, the outside unit stops humming, but now the inside unit hums (even though the fan is not running). As a struggling single dad of 2, I could surely afford a $2 switch to replace - otherwise its gonna be a cold winter (yes, even in Orlando). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the outside unit might have some power issues. The humming noise is the contactor pulling in. That happens when the thermostat calls for heat or cool and sends 24vac to the outdoor unit. Use a multimeter and check to see if you have the 240v at the contactor. If you're not good with that kind of thing, just check to make sure the breaker serving the outdoor unit isn't tripped.

If that ain't it, it gets more complicated.

Good luck, ST.
