Aux Heat stips question

man I'm full of questions today...

I know my system has heat strips, I don't know what size they are..
my question is can another be added to the one already there or would it have to be replaced with a larger one..

to be honest with you i have never heard this ever asked before.
i have always replace heatstrips with the same rating of the old
one. there should be a wiring diagram on the air handler access
panel somewhere on it it will show the kw of the heat strips.
you can't add a larger one though, with out changing several other
things, and i would'nt recommend it(possible fire hazard).

hello again barry

well I opened the air handler this morning and what do you know
I have more questions.. but first here are the pictures..
Diagram
Model

even thought it's not marked on the label the heat stip is only 5 Kw..
that sucks.. it looks like up to 20kw was available at the time, but I must say back then I think FL was warmer..

anyhow
here are my questions...
the motor has several wires coming from it but only the Blue medium speed is used.. why is that?
and does this mean that it was a variable speed system just not hooked up that way?
and why the medium speed instead of the high speed?

last one.

when we first moved in I tried to use my other digital thermostat but if I remember correctly it required a C wire which was not present..

from the looks of the diagram the C wire only runs to the outside unit. can that be tap and sent to the thermostat..

soooooooorrrrry for all the questions...

now that I see the inside of this thing I really want a new one.. but if I can get it working that will give me more time to shop..

looking at the airhandler and outside unit I'm pretty sure I could change them out myself minus the Freon deal...
with all the space in my attic, they did a poor job of running the flexi duct and mounting the unit..

just trying to digest all of these questions at once. (and it doesn't mean that we don't have a life too). leave the fan speeds alone it is set up for your area(and since you have not provided us with the make and model of the entire system
that you have i would not even think about telling you to change the stuff.
(more info on the system would be helpful). regarding the new thermo, why do you want to replace it, what kind of thermo is installed now, what do you want to replace it with (see, we can also ask a lot of questions too, but i'm not finished)? and as to you doing the work to the system(other than some electrical issues), do you have a recovery pump? , a recovery tank? a way to pull a vacuum on the system? nitrogen to dry the line sets? set of scales to weigh the freon? a way to solder the line sets together? a way to check for leaks? etc. . i'm not trying to be mean, or to be a butt ho#e , but there is a lot more in the HVAC field than just hooking it up . and i must let you know that it unlawful to release ANY type of freon into the air, the fines that the e.p.a. are very large. just some things you should, as well as others should know..
let us know whats going on, we are here to help.

I'm sorry barry, I admit I don't know it all and most of what I think I know is speculation, but that is why I'm here... to learn...

all my bumbling questions have spread out all the key answers over several posts so I will consolidate them here..

the manufacture of the system is Tempstar (sold by sears I believe beacuse it also has sears part #'s on it.)
Model numbers
outside unit---ch3036vka2
inside unit-----bh3036skb1

the thermostat is a hunter model 44428 shown here
I want to change it because it is huge and protrudes too far from the wall, it also has no back lite and the relays inside are loud..
you and some one else suggested the honeywell vision pro as a good thermostat. but in my reasearch most of the newer thermostats require a C or common wire to be present..
the picture I posted of the diagram shows the common wire but it does not run to the thermostat it only runs to the unit outside...
I just want to know if it was ok to connect the same common wire to the thermostat.
I think this is all for now until my defrost board shows up..
