Got a price on a 2.5 ton heat pump installed. How does this look?

O.K.

I had the salesman in today for an evaluation. I presently have a 2.5 ton A/C and want to convert to a Air heatpump. I was quoted a price of $4669.00 installed for a 13 seer Luxair, or $4995 for a 14 seer Luxair. My unit I have now is a luxair and has given me trouble free service for about 5-6 years now without one problem.

This price includes a complete system with lines, coil new breaker, disconnect, permits etc. and also a Vision Pro 8,000 thermostat. It also includes a clean up and tune up of my oil furnace for backup (no heat strips). 5 year parts and labor warranty also. Also includes a follow up checkup 1 year later.

Also, if I'm not mistaken it includes a new blower for oil furnace. (have to check)

Does it sound to high?

Northeast Ohio.

My reason is to try and cut down on heating costs plus at 50 years of age I sorta want to get away from firewood a little bit.

The Luxaire is a good unit. The salesman told me it was connected or related to York? He said they are not "fancy" with lots of trim. Just a good unit.

I have had no problem whatsoever with my AC unit.

Ed,

Yes, that is what I plan on doing. Personally, I was hoping to get around the $3500.00 for the same work, but, I don't know, I could be asking to much.

Just curious...
Will this install include new ducts and returns?

Also, just a point to bring up.
My buddy had a house and heated it for years with a wood stove and fireplace. He he worked on the house constantly, he replaced the windows, sealed and insulated and really brought the house up to todays standards, after he had saved his money, he purchased a heat pump.
He had added enough value to his house, that he had decided to sell and pick up another house with a bigger yard.
All was well, until one night he decided to have a fire in his fireplace.
As he discribed it, he and his wife were looking over a sales contract, in front of the fire place, when the heat pump kicked on.
A few seconds later, his house filled with smoke as the vacuume created by the air return pulled smoke down the chiminey and into his house.
I am not exactly sure what he had to do to fix the problem, but I do know it took him about 2 weeks to clean up the house, and the HVAC contractor did have to change the location of the return to stop it from happening again.

I tell this story, only so you can be aware of things you would never think of.

Steve,

It does not include heatducts or returns as he will use my existing system. Said he MIGHT have just a little modification but not much.

I just recieved another estimate for $5500.00 for a 3 ton unit and a 10 year warranty.
So, the first two estimates look very close.
