Outdoor Unit Leaking Water???
#1

I was mowing my grass and noticed a small pool of water under one side of my heat pump unit. I'm a HP newbie-do the outdoor coils condense water?? I'm used to normal AC coils just heating up when run. FYI, I'm in Indiana and it is hot now so the unit is running in cooling mode only. Thanks in advance!

That is pretty much normal....the large copper line should be cold and damp/wet and the small line warm/hot. The large line that will be cold/wet will drip as well as the receiver tank and line inside the unit. Sounds normal to me. Is the unit keeping the house cool and cycling on and off?

Hmmm....just how much cycling? It it's real hot outside it should be running most of the time and I would figure probably about 40 mins to an hour or so depending on the temp you keep the house set at. Too frequent cycling is not a good thing. The reason I ask is the lower the refrigerant level the colder the air until the unit freezes, but with a small puddle of water, sounds as if it's ok. My outside unit here in Maryland usually produces a small to medium puddle on, as you look at the unit, the left side that actually runs off the pad. When the unit shuts down take a peek down through the fan and you'll probably see the large line and tank sweating quite a bit.

Oh yeah-ice cold air, cycling (a lot more cycling than my old house/standard AC-all this new cycling worries me a little!)
Filter clean and new?? Like said on that water there. But any frost on the big copper line inside or out by the outdoor unit????
Dont start another post here. Stay in the same and post back to it. If you jump around like this we cant pin it down for you. Im with Matt that short of time Id say low on freon and the cut out switch is turning the unit off. besure and check the big copper line for frost.

Well...
I took a picture of the serial number, etc. label w my cell phone but it came out too blurry. I will use my dig camera and relay the info for you. Did you see my other post on here about cycling times? I've just timed my unit and its quite alarming to me... 7:45 run time, then idle for 6:45. I'm thinking this is due to the fact that I can't set the span on my thermostat. I need to find the instruction manual (its a Bryant thermostat). Perhaps there's a key combo to change the span.

Some stats...
It's being stopped/started "correctly" by the thermostat-I'm 99% sure of it. The house just passed a new home inspection and they did check the heat/cooling cycles... I didn't ask at the time about the cycle times though. I might give them a call back because one of the inspectors was a HVAC specialist. FYI, here's some specs on the outdoor unit:
RHEEM AIR CONDITIONER
Mod.# RPMD-042JAZ
Compressor R.L.A. 18.6/18.6
Our home is 2100 sq ft ranch with a basement. Plenty of attic vents (7). Not sure what type of insulation was used in the attic but it was built 2 yrs ago so it should be decent/intact. Any thoughts???

Well that should be a 3.5 ton AC and the amp draw at 18.6. With a 2100 sq ft home that 3.5 ton AC Id say is like in the ball park
You might look at where the tstat is any registers that can blow on it??? Also check in side the tstat Is the hole in the wall where the wire come out is that sealed up.
You didnt say -- when the unit is running is the big copper line cold an wet small line warm to hot.
