Carrier Aux/Em heat Question

I have a Carrier split heat pump system with heat strips. When the Aux heat kicks in (either by me moving the thermostat or by cold temps) the Emergency heat kicks in also. Doesn't matter if the switch is off or on. Is this the way this unit is supposed to work or do I have an issue? I also have heard that when Em heat is on, the outside unit should be off, is this true with this unit? Model number is 38YRA048300.

Wink

Might be how they wired it at the tstat. When you call for heat and its not cold in the home just the heatpump should come on at set temp. Now when the heatpump cant heat the home or keep up with the home then the electric elements will kick in to like help out some then cut off and as soon as the temp is up to what its set for it all will kick of. No when the unit goes into defrost thats the same as AC. So the elements come on so you dont have cool air. Now when you turn the tstat to EME then the heat pump dont come on just the electric elements.
Yes the pump can run and does all the time.
