I have a Trane Heat Pump Furnace XE78 that has back up Natural Gas.
During this recent cold wave in Nothern Ohio (-4 to 10F) the Heat Pump runs 90% of the time and blows rather cold air, not real conforable.
I finally turned on the gas heat at the thermostat ( called emergency heat) and it did a much better jobs, blows much warmer air and only 50% of the time.
I thought the Gas was suppose to come on automatically when out side temperature dropped down to 20F or so. Thats my question, any info would be appriecated.
We had out house built 13 years ago and its all electric and a get a break on our electric rate in the winter time, the furnace / A/C in general I'm very happy with.

You should have a outdoor tstat in the unit there . This should turn the gas unit on.When socold

Would it pay to go all electric there on the heatpump
Also does the gas furnace come on when the unit goes into defrost??? It should , If not it will blow cold air in the home.

Ed,
Thanks for reply, I'm a retired Mech engineer, so I should know more about this unit. I'm going to call trane and see if I can get manual.
In general I'm very happy with unit and cost of elec with the discount I get.

You can down load owner's manual off of Trane's website. but it's not going to be the deep details.
let me know what models you got and see if I can find one for you.

JAY11J,
Thank for the reply, hen things work right you tend to not to notice them, my furnace is working right, but its time to look at in in detail and I was surprised.
Outside Unit: Trane XE-1000
Inside Trane XE-78
Gas Furnace American Standard TUD080C936A1 80,000 BTU
Controller White-Rogers 50A50-450
So we have here is a gas furnce with a Trane Heat Pump controlled my the White Rogers module.
Interesting

ok, I think we are going to start on a clean slate on that t-stat!
I'd suggest the Honeywell VisionPro.. With this new t-stat, it will clean up lot of these wires.
