Concerns about heat pump thermostat installation

Hi there,

I’m having some distress installing my new Honeywell thermostat. Not all letters on my old thermostat are matching the new one! Look at the pictures below; do you think I need a professional installer?

Need a bit more info.

What brand of heat pump you have outside?

What is your back up source? Gas or Electric, or Oil?

What brand is your indoor unit?

Yikes.... I looked at the books closer, your t-stat will not work with this set up.

On page 18, you want Heat pump with Aux back up. It's not listed.. Says heat pump without Aux back up.

I'd suggest you to return that and get a good Honeywell VisionPro TH8320 t-stat, along with an outdoor sensor.

Hi, Me again....

I THINK I might be able to make it work with this set up.

I am going to play with it on paper, and see what I can do.

Ok, I think I got it to work.

A couple of questions for you.

-Current/old t-stat, do you know if the oil kicks in when the outdoor unit goes into defrost?

-Is there another relay near by the outdoor sensor or on the furnace? (See page 9 of your heat pump book, the emergency heat relay)

The way I am going to wire it if you got the emergency heat relay, and when the heat pump goes into defrost, it will be blowing cool air out of the vents till it cycles back into heat mode. Really shouldn't be using the furnace when it goes into defros cuz it put out a lot of heat, and may be hard on the compressor outside.

Any update for me?

I kinda got something together, but I need to know more info on a relay that the burner maybe on.

Otherwise, to save the mess, "clean house" and put in the Honeywell TH8320 w/ outdoor sensor.

Hi Jay,

Sorry, just got back home…. Exhausted…long day.
You know what, outdoor unit is not kicking anymore…I don’t know what happen!! Completely dead! I don’t really need this!

I looked around; there are a lot of stuffs that I don’t know what are there for. Will take some picture and post them during the week end.

Thanks Jay

I've played around of what we've got so far. I am afraid it's not going to work at all.. At first I thought I had it... But no.

if we went what I had planned, the burner will come on any time if the outdoor temp falls below set point, and never shut off till it warmed back up outside. I don't think you want to over heat the house!

BUT, unless that outdoor sensor has 3 port, (Open, Close, and Hot) then I might be able to get it to work. But I"ll wait till you post back.

I also have a Lennox

Try to e-mail them and give your HWell stat #, your Lenox stat # and the letters off your Lennox stat. I went through their web site and they responded within 24 hours. My Lennox had 1 or 2 terminals that did not match up to anything in the HWell install manual. One was for what appeared to be an outdoor temp sensor and the other for "service system". They told me they didn't have a "consumer installable" stat for my Lennox. Here is the e-mail address from their response.

Are you going to get the outdoor sensor for the VP as well? I would suggest you to do so, that way you can get rid of the old outdoor sensor.

Thanks for the update.

I take it you got a TRUE t-stat, the VisionPro?

What did you set up the heat pump compressor lock out at?
