When this happens does it switch over to auxillar heat ?

20 F is too cold for the heat pump.

YES The Aux heat takes over Is this a normal indication that the Aux heat has been
activated? Should I switch the control on thermostat to Aux heat as long as outside
temps stay this low? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND REPLY!

It sounds like this is normal. The unit has an (Low Temp Cut-Off) LTCO jumper from factory to auto-engage your Aux heat. It is likely telling you that. If your Aux heat is kicking in by itself don't bother switching the tstat as you can still get some savings when your daytime temps push above LTCO to use the cheaper heat pump.

Arrow

this is my first reply, i hope i'm doing it correctly.

code 3 i believe is discharge line temp is over 275*
sounds like something is sticking, causing the element to overheat. perhaps the limit thermostat is faulty, allowing the element to overheat till the high limit eventually shuts things down.
