If you choose to fix the leak, you will have to spend some money to find out if it can be fixed. And make sure you get someone that is interested in fixing it rather than just giving up and trying to sell you a new system. But understand some leaks are not worth the time to fix, such as a leak inside an A coil, where it would it would cost the same to replace the entire coil. A difficult to find leak in an outdoor unit may be just as cost effective to replace the entire system, so put yourself in the frame of mind ready to check out all local utility, state, fed and manufacturer incentives.

12 years on a regular central air system might be worth fixing, but on a Heat Pump thats worked year round , 12 years is getting toward its life expectancy especially if its not had routine maintenance. Youre at the point where some of the electrical components in the Heat Pump unit will be going out. If youre planning on moving within a year or two, then I might elect to get it fixed and take a chance. Regards.
