Electric Baseboard Thermostat Install, huh?

I'm trying to replace the thremostat for an electric baseboard heater. It's 240v, as far as I know. The thermostat is a 2-pole. I killed the power, and assumed it would be a matter of connecting the four wires coming from the thermostat to four wires coming from the wall. I planned to use the existing thermostat as a model.

However, upon removing the old thermostat, there are six wires (three sets of two) coming in. They were hooked up to the old thermostat in some random-seeming manner; I pulled them off. So, now I have no idea how to hook up the new thermostat.

Here's a picture of what I'm dealing with:

Any ideas?

Did the thermostat control two strips of heat?

Need to turn power on and determine which wire are the feed ie: the hot wires.
