Question Aux Heat doesn't cycle on when needed

Have a 3-yr old Trane Weathertron heat pump. When it is below 32 the system runs continuously, blowing cool air. Stat says it's 68 in the house but it is very chilly. Aux heat will not cycle on unless stat is moved up 3 degrees, then it comes on briefly and shuts off. Can set to emer heat and that will cycle on and off and keeps the house warm - but assume this is very expensive to run. Tech has been here twice - says we have a freon leak and has added dye to check for that. Adjusted thermostat which said we had gas aux heat (we have elec). Stat is Trane TCONT800 series programmable. Ques: IS there a setting that controls aux ht kicking in when hp can no longer maintain temp? How do we get aux ht to cycle on when needed to maintain room temp, not increase it?

What is your set point? That stat will turn on Aux as it needs it unlike the older ones that will only let the temp fall behind 2˚.

KNow how to get into the installer set up menu?

Yes, I know how to get into the installer menu. When I checked it had been set up for gas aux and we have elec so I don't have much faith in the settings, but also don't understand some of them, so have not changed them except to change the deadband from 4 degrees to 2 which seems to translate into a three degree spread in temp before aux kicks in. Do not know what the setpoint is and/or where to find it.

That's your problem, the gas setting won't let it cycle on.

Here are the settings.

160-0 I don't suggest temp change on HP system.
170-7 (take it you have single stage compressor?)
180-1
200-0
210- Do you have an outdoor sensor? If so, i'll be back with other settings that may be needed for he control.
220-2
250-3
270-3 (I know the manual says 9, but that too much of a cycle, 3 is better for it and comfort
280-1 If you have common/B wire hooked up. make great night light.

The service tech changed the gas to electric yesterday, set the temp up 4 degrees and left. Once the sun went down and it got into the 20's last night the system started running constantly - seemed to be maintaining temp at 68, but was constantly blowing chilly air and the room was quite cold. The aux ht has never switched on unless temp is upped by 3-4 degrees. Switched the emer ht on for the night which is what we are using now. Expect a $1200 elec bill!! We do have a convertible speed air handler - I think. I understand how the sys is supposed to work and why, but don't know much about the tech stuff. Air handler install guide says it's a convertible variable speed 2 1/2 5 ton system then lists 10 or 12 model numbers ranging from 2TEE3F31A10000A to TEE3F65A... I can go up into the attic and check the model # on the system if that is what I need to do. Will check the settings you gave me and correct. We do not have an outside sensor. Appreciate your help immensely.

Corrected settings - didn't have a 170 or 210 setting. Does that mean something else is not set right so those options are not showing up?

I used full access - saw the tech do it yesterday and went online to get the directions when system stopped working again last night.
