how do you check for leaks in your heat pump system

I have an old heat pump from Evcon (12 Seer series) when we bought the place 3 years ago the unit did not work we had a service tech come out, he recharged the system and it worked fine for a year. he said it had a leak some where but did not seem motivated to find the leak. Can I pressurize the system with air and look for bubbles? Can I still get the coolant to recharge the system if I can find the leak?
