Contractor wired wrong? only 4 of 7 wires connected

Greetings, and thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I have a Goodman GPH1348M41AB heat pump; on the unit there are 7 thermostat wires... but I notice that the installer used just 4 wires because that was what was in the wall. To me, this seems like a bad idea. Am I wrong?

In any case, recently my heat and cooling seem to have stopped working, and the unit is only 2 years old. I am curious if I rewired it properly with all 7 wires if that could make any difference at all. Thanks again.

Welcome to the forums !

All the connections aren't always used.
If your unit was working ok and recently failed.... it would not seem likely to be one of those thermostat wires.

Have you checked the associated circuit breakers ?
Next step would be to check for 240 vac at the compressor and 120 vac at the air handler.

Also check the 5 amp fuse in the airhandler. Messing with the thermostat wires and shorting them to each other can blow that fuse.

We need more info, does you system do anything? Does the fan run? You have a package unit so have you checked the breakers/disconnect outside at the unit?
