Red face TRANE XL1400 Heat Pump with TAYSTAT540 thermostat

Lately my ac seems to turn on at the appropriate temp but does not shut down until temp is quite cold. With the turn on temp set at 78 deg F it kept cooling down to 72 degr F where I intervened to turn off the system. Can anyone help me with how to troubleshoot this problem and possible solutions? Please advise. TIA

Did you turn it off at the stat, air handler or outdoor unit?

If you are turning it off at the stat, it sounds like a stat problem.

A test could be pulling the stat off of the wall, but if it turns off when you turn the mode to off or manually raise the temperature very high it already proves this.

If this has any bearing on your situation or not. Once in a while my HP will run after the temp is satisfied because it also has a humidity setting to satisfy. Ending temp is sometime 4 degrees lower than stat setting. Then is back to normal

Mike, the Op's thermostat does not have an overcooling/dehumidification function.
