Heat pump not running but inside furnace does?

Just wondering if there is anything I can do myself. My furnace inside is running mostly under auxiliary heat but my outside heat pump does not come on. I have reset it with all the breakers and still won't come on. It was humming until I reset the breaker next to the outside unit. Its suppose to be in the 20's tonight and really would love any help.

Welcome to the forums.

Your heatpump system could be set up so that when it reaches a certain temperature the compressor is locked out. In other words..... if it gets down to a certain temperature it won't operate and the electric reheats perform the heating job.

If the outside unit was humming that would mean that the compressor was running but not the condensor fan. That usually means the unit is in defrost mode.

There probably isn't much you can do to work on this system.
You could post the make and model of the system.

One of the HVAC pro's should stop by and offer his opinion.

Thank you so much for the info. I will get the make and model as soon as possible and post that.
