help with noise from heat pump

Hi... The self contained package heat pump itself is really not loud. Its only been installed about a year. Its a 2.5 ton unit. The problem is that its outside the bedroom wall that my wife and i sleep in. When its running its like there is more of a roaring sound, but if you go outside it don't seem to be loud at all. The outside of the wall is hardboard siding with vinyl siding over it. It seems to me that the hood that covers the duct work at the rear of the unit and connects to the house is transmitting the noise of the unit running thru the wall. Is there anyway to put some type of dampner or do they make something i don't know about. I was wondering if i disconnect the metal hood from the house or the back of the unit (or both) and put like a foam stripping around it like a gasket if that might help stop the noise. The way the unit sounds on the outside standing right next to it, you should'nt hardly even hear it on the inside of the house....thanks for any input

If it's louder inside than outside...... it sounds like it's the actual air moving in the ducts that you are hearing. Are the ducts insulated in your bedroom area ?
