Heat pump outside unit is cutting off

My heat pump outside unit is cutting off before it gets to the set temp. My inside fan continues to run and never cuts off. I am presently running it on emergency heat and the fan inside fan is working correct. I have replaced the thermostat with a digital type. Today it is 43 degrees outside and I turned the heat pump on and it ran about ten minutes I started to see frost on the outside coils at the bottom then it cut off before the set temp. Could the Freon be low or the defrost board be bad.

Could the Freon be low
I think that would be my GUESS... since I know next to nothing about heat pumps... but I do know that when stuff starts freezing up like that it's often a sign of low freon charge.

You posted in BOILERS forum... I'm moving your post to the appropriate one. The guys there know more about this stuff than I do.

You need to check if the compressor is still running and not the outside fan in order to know if the unit is in defrost mode.

If the entire unit shuts down outside then it may be a low freon issue.

A make and model number could be helpful too.

The entire unit shuts down outside. It is a Bryant heat pump and model 694cn042-a.

Ahhh..... I see a springtime project on the horizon. Get the leak fixed or replace the unit.
