Yearly service

I have a Bryant heat pump with natural gas backup. It has a outside temp sensor and on demand defrost i think they call it. System works OK as far as I can tell (when it goes into defrost gas heat comes on for a few minutes then goes off). Installer company wants to schedule a yearly service at this time, (January). I thought (from posts on this forum) that it was best to check the charge when the unit was in cooling mode. Its 30deg F outside. I'll put them off to warmer weather if thats whats best.

The best option is to check the heating system in the fall or winter and check the cooling system and AC drain in the spring or summer. You'd get a better reading of operating conditions.
