Heat pump backup furnace not holding set temp
I have a Trane XL14i heat pump system with propane furnace backup system XV80? seems to be working fine with one exception. When the overnight temp drops to around 11-14 degrees (which is not often here) in the morning the temp setting of 68 is not maintained. The aux. heat stays on but the inside temp drops to 65 but recovers in about 2-3 hours. There is no heat pump lockout set and the system uses something called a fossil fuel kit to switch between heat pump and backup. Heat pump seems to run a lot but maintains temp even in the low 20s outside. Do I have a problem or is my system maybe undersized for that low temp. It's heating about 2900 sq ft all on one floor. Upstairs on separate system and seldom used.

Additional information
Forgot to add...... Once aux heat kicks in at night system seems to stay on aux all night and into next day until temp rises above about 30-32. Once that happens heat pump works fine and maintains temp down to mid to low twenties with occasional switch to aux heat furnace. Last night switched back and forth several times per hour until temp went down to 20. I don't understand in addition to above problem why it doesn't switch back to heat pump sooner since heat pump seems to work down into twenties by itself. Sorry for so long winded but I wanted to out out all the information I have right now
