Heat Pump Contactor Not Pulling In

The inside air handler comes on when the thermostat calls for COOL but the outside unit not starting. I can actually hear and see the contactor try to pull in but not pulling in. If I manually push in the contactor everything works fine fan turns and compressor comes on but if I release it stops working. I have my HVAC EPA license and work for an apartment complex, just need a little advice of whats causing this? I am thinking that it may be the transformer in the air handler not working properly.

Put your meter on the contactor coil. If you have 24V, then the contactor is bad. If 0 volts, check from R to C and Y to C in the furnace.

If you check for 24 volts and your voltage disappears you have a bad connection in a wire nut or bad t-stat wire
