bad compressor?

Hi group. I'm new to this forum and see that this is a pretty broad forum but here it goes. About a year or so ago my hvac tech cousin looked at my american standard heritage 10 heat pump and told me that the compressor was bad and it not worth fixing the unit. I don't remember seeing much diagnosing. Now I'm broke and need to see if I can diagnose it myself. I am pretty well rounded on all ends of home maint and repair. When the unit is turned on the outside unit basically does nothing. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums.

You had your cousin there and you don't believe him ?
In order to do some testing you are going to need a volt/ohmmeter.
Have you got one and do you know how to use it ?
