Trane XE1000 won't start

noticed fan was running on air handler but no heat (other than elec aux) from heat pump. Quick check showed current on both lines outside, but heat pump wasn't running, slight buzz, and topside of unit was warm to hot. I shut off breaker to unit, now I'm wondering if a capacitor is shot so that it won't get a starting current. How would I test? Thanks for your time. TL

To test the capacitor you need a meter which will read microfarads. If it is a dual capacitor with 3 sets of terminals, measure from common (C) to hermetic (H) & from common to fan (F). Compare the readings to the markings on the cap.

If the capacitor appears swollen on the end that has the terminals it always requires replacing.

They don't always swell when they fail. Measuring with a meter can show you the microfarad reading if you get a meter capable of measuring capacitance

Bad caps may only be slightly swollen like this one...
