Advice on Trane Repair - Fossil Fuel Kit - Comfort Link II
I have the TUC1B040A9241AC Dual pack, 9 years old, part of a dual system. Service guy said "system would light when I had it jumped out but only sometimes when system called for aux. heat. Noticed oil on draft motor."
The 1st recommendation is to replace the heat pump b/c of the oil (bearings going bad).
2nd choice is to replace the thermostat and fuel kit with a newer style thermostat ($311) that doesn't require a fossil kit, which also requires a new control board ($467). A new motor ($669). A long story but I happen to have a Comfort Link II b/c I wanted a programmable t/s. But I couldn't get it to work and I recall it was because it was a different system, which might mean it could be used with a new control board.
Question 1. I doubt the problem is two-fold, so it's probably the fuel kit. Can't I just replace that?
2. Does is make sense the new t/s would work and save $311 if they install a new control board?
3. Since it's a dual system, if the motor fails on one, I can still get by. Any reason to do anything on the motor right now? And should I consider a new Unit?
4. If I should consider a new unit, should I expect the other unit to fail soon and therefore consider a new system? Is 9 yrs old?

I wasn't able to bring up a manual for your unit but it sounds like your tech hasn't proven the fault.
Oil on the inducer isn't a reason to condemn a $600 part.
Failure to operate with voltage provided, high amperage, low vacuum at pressure switch would be more convincing.
If you post a picture of the furnace control board including the control wire connections, and the diagram we may be able to offer more assistance. It seems like a VisionPro TH8321R thermostat should be sufficient without an adapter board.
