Cost for new A/C install?

Im trying to get a 'range' of install costs for a system to see if mine is in the ballpark. I have finally located a dealer that i really like, that does proper heat loads, and has been very open and honest about my questions knowing that I am familiar with AC systems to some degree. However, I keep hearing people having 3.5-4 ton systems installed for 6000 or so, and Im trying to wrap my head around why my install is quoted at a little more than twice that.

The system im looking at is a 16 SEER 5 ton heat pump, VS, two speed, fully communicating system. I know its 'fancier' than a standard system, but is it TWICE the cost fancy? This would also include or mostly include a 3 zone EWC system too.

Does this make sense to anyone else? Im not up to speed on equipment costs.

Are you talking about 6000 sq ft?

No, $6000. Sorry about that. Its an average rough figure for around here from what I can see.

It's not just twice as fancy if you're adding a three zone duct control system. That alone is a big cost item.

The fancier system will save you money in operating cost but will cost more to fix.

That system would easily be ten grand or probably more in my area.

Perfect. Thank you all for the input. That all seems to match what I see, so that's good. The system does have a 12 year warranty. My old Lennox had a 10 year, which was nice.

That would be a parts only warranty. What is the parts AND labor warranty period ?

1 year labor. Dealer will go to 2. Outside of that, you have to buy an extended service plan of some sort.

Honestly never thought much about it. There is an optional 12 year labor through the manufacturer, fully transferable, but you gotta pay for it. Its not much over a 12 year period, honestly, but it is not included.

Is that necessary?

A parts and labor warranty will pick up things like the filter drier and refrigerant with a compressor replacement where a parts warranty is only the compressor.

It can save you quite a bit of money should you ever need it.

The manufacturer pays all parts and labor for the first year. That's all inclusive. Everything.
After the first year the mfg will pick up just the price for a defective part but not the labor to do it.

If you needed a new compressor..... there are expendables to be considered..... filter/dryer(s) which need to be put in when a system is opened, refrigerant and the biggie.... labor.

If you get an extended warranty on parts and labor.... that is all inclusive too.

Is an extended warranty necessary on a high end A/C system..... in my opinion...probably not.

Long after you've forgotten the price, you'll still have the system ... the important thing you are buying is the installer; if he's competent with integrity you'll be happy. A bad install will lead to years of hassles.

$1500- $2000 a ton would be a starting point. More options is more costly
